Farewell Prayers

‘Farewell Prayers’ is the third and final album of my ‘Prayers Trilogy’. After ‘Night Prayers’ (2011) and ‘Prayers of Silence’ (2014), I wanted to explore the theme of ‘Farewell’ with this album.
Night of Tears is one of my earliest compositions, written at the time of my first serious heartache when I was sixteen (1995).
It is followed by my Piano Sonata №2 (2013), a work that centers around three different themes, each one slower and more introvert than the previous one — a journey of letting go and finding inner peace.
Adoratio (2013) is a contemplative cycle in five movements, all of which are strictly based on Gregorian chants that have a special place in my heart.
After these meditations on some of the oldest melodies of our Occidental music culture, I paraphrase three pop songs by Michael Patrick Kelly (2012/2013). Their beautiful messages of gratitude (Thanking Blessed Mary), hope (Hope) and love (Rain of Roses) inspired me to recompose and embed them in some very personal piano parts.
Farewell Prayer (2013) is a musical interpretation of chapters 14–17 of the Gospel of John, the ‘Farewell Discourse’ given by Jesus to his disciples the night before his crucifixion.
I composed Adieu as a musical tribute to Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg who passed away in April 2019 at the age of 98. The piece’s 98 bars begin with the ducal family’s anthem, the so-called ‘Wilhelmus’, which is later combined with my ‘Adieu melody’.
Death is a part of life. Unfortunately many children have to learn this far too soon. I composed Forever for the Luxembourgish association ‘Trauerwee’ (‘path of grief’) that accompanies grieving children.
May the compositions on this album convey the peace I found when I wrote them.

„Farewell Prayers“ ist das dritte und abschließende Album meiner „Prayers Trilogie“. Nach „Night Prayers“ (2011) und „Prayers of Silence“ (2014), widme ich mich mit diesem Album dem Thema Abschied.
Night of Tears ist eine meiner frühesten Kompositionen, die ich mit sechzehn zur Zeit meines ersten Liebeskummers komponiert habe (1995).
Die anschließende Klaviersonate Nr. 2 (2013) beruht auf drei Themen, jedes davon langsamer und introvertierter als das vorige — ein Exkurs über das Loslassen und das Finden inneren Friedens.
Adoratio (2013) ist ein kontemplativer Zyklus in fünf Sätzen, die alle strikt auf Gregorianischen Chorälen basieren, welche einen besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen haben.
Nach diesen Meditationen über einige der ältesten Melodien der abendländischen Musikkultur paraphrasiere ich drei Pop Songs von Michael Patrick Kelly (2012/2013). Ihre wunderbare Botschaften von Dankbarkeit (Thanking Blessed Mary), Hoffnung (Hope) und Liebe (Rain of Roses) inspirierten mich dazu, sie neu zu gestalten und in eigene, sehr persönliche Klavierpartien einzubetten.
Farewell Prayer (2013) ist eine musikalische Interpretation der Kapitel 14 bis 17 aus dem Johannesevangelium, den „Abschiedsreden“, die Jesus seinen Jüngern in der Nacht vor der Kreuzigung hinterließ.
Adieu komponierte ich als musikalische Hommage an Großherzog Jean von Luxemburg, der im April 2019 98-jährig verstarb. Das 98 Takte umfassende Stück beginnt mit der Hymne der großherzoglichen Familie, dem sogenannten „Wilhelmus“, das später mit meiner eigenen „Adieu-Melodie“ kombiniert wird.
Der Tod ist ein Teil des Lebens. Leider müssen viele Kinder diese Erfahrung viel zu früh machen. Ich habe Forever für „Trauerwee“ („Trauerweg“) komponiert, eine Organisation, die Kinder in Trauer begleitet.
Mögen die Kompositionen dieses Albums den Frieden vermitteln, den ich beim Schreiben dieser Musik empfunden habe.

Pianist and composer David Ianni from Luxembourg has become well-known for his project MY URBAN PIANO for which a series of nine music videos was produced in different European Capitals of Culture. An original composition was dedicated to each city and performed on an artistically designed piano. The pianos were donated to institutions of the cities.
